Worldwide, the origin of agriculture has been a controversial subject among scholars not only due to the variety of proposals about where it was originated but also because of the different possible factors that triggered the early domestication of plants. As a consequence, there have been different theories and hypothesises that have addressed this important phenomenon; however, current research has provided new evidence which challenges previous ideas and argues for a new point of view that correlates early cultivation with the climate change at the end of the Pleistocene. Although cultural evolution and population growth were introduced as first attempts to explain the origin of agriculture, primary evidence of recent investigations in areas like northern Syria, Mesopotamia, and China has shown that the drastic variation of climate from the Pleistocene to the Holocene was, in fact, a key determinant to the early development of agriculture. Hypothesises such as Population Growth and Cultural Evolution arose as attempts to explain the causes for the inception of agriculture.
